ELLSA 2017: ENGLISH PROFICIENCY: MOVING BEYOND THE PLATEAU 
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE - FOSSILIZED ERRORS - ASSESSMENT

ELLSA 2017 was the 4th annual international school EAL network conference in Asia which created a network of teachers from the region, to connect, collaborate, and advocate for the teaching and learning of EAL students. Participants attended workshops offered by leaders in the field of EAL. ELLSA 2017 was attended by 135 teachers from 12 different countries.

Keynote: Mariana Castro is the Director of Academic Language and Literacy Initiatives at WIDA, which is housed at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at the University of Wisconsin.  She was an educator for over 15 years in public schools and has engaged in professional development and research over the last 10 years at WIDA.  Her current work revolves around the development of standards, tools and resources for educators of multilingual children and youth.  She and her team at WIDA are engaged in research and development in the areas of English, Spanish and multilingual language development; family engagement; assessment of language proficiency; issues of social justice related to race, culture and language; educational policy; and human-centered design.
